Journey of an English Major

Some of you know that I teach online classes at BYU-Idaho. I love it. I am currently teaching an English class for English majors and minors. One of the goals of this course is to give students a chances to explore the career options available upon graduation. I would have loved to have a class like this when was going to school.

It got me really thinking about the path I’ve been on since I graduated. I’ve been lucky enough to work as a technical writer, web content writer, web designer, software trainer, public school teacher, university instructor, creative writer, usability specialist, and project manager. Approaching the end of an internship, I had no idea all of the opportunities and experiences that would come into my life.

If I had the chance to go back in time and visit with myself when I was still in school, I would share the following five things:

Explore your options

I sped through program. I even decided to take 21 credits over a summer semester. I was in a hurry to get finished, so I worked through my classes to get to the end. II did enjoy my classes, and I picked up valuable skills that helped me. I am grateful for the path that I have been on. I just encourage you to explore your options well so you don’t get down a path later and wonder if you did enough exploring.

Pick up project management skills

This is one skill I didn’t realize I would need. I am talking about more than just making sure that your group project gets completed on time. Find a good book on project management. I also recommend reading Crucial Conversations. You will need to manage projects and people. The better you are at both of these skills, the more successful you will be.

Pick up a hobby

Take time to unwind. Find something you enjoy. Play the guitar, plant a garden, play golf, go for a run, learn how to make cabinets, work on your story, or take up painting. Having some downtime to focus on a hobby helps you refuel, and avoid future burnout.

Make connections

It really is about who you know. The job market is changing. Networking is huge. Take time to build and maintain a LinkedIn profile. The more people you know, the more career opportunities you will have. Networking also helps helps with hobbies. Watch this networking tips video from the BYU-Idaho Alumni office.

Find time to worship

Make sure to find time for God in your life. Set aside time to study and worship. The more you know Him, the better you will understand the choices you will face and the paths you will travel.
